Solar Roof Installation Glossary

Understanding the language of solar roof installation is essential for every homeowner considering a switch to renewable energy. Whether you’re reviewing contractor proposals, comparing system options, or evaluating your home’s energy needs, knowing these key terms will help you make informed decisions and get the most out of your solar investment.

Essential Terms Every Homeowner Should Know

Photovoltaic (PV) System

A photovoltaic system is the complete setup of components that converts sunlight directly into usable electricity for your home. It includes solar panels, an inverter, mounting hardware, and electrical wiring. When contractors reference a "PV system" in proposals, they are describing this full assembly — not just the panels themselves. Understanding this distinction helps you evaluate quotes more accurately and ensure you're comparing complete systems.

Solar Shingles

Solar shingles, also called building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), are photovoltaic cells designed to look and function like traditional roofing materials. Unlike conventional solar panels mounted on top of an existing roof, solar shingles replace the roof surface itself, combining energy generation with weather protection. They offer a more aesthetically seamless appearance but typically involve different installation requirements and cost structures than standard panel systems.

Inverter

An inverter is a critical component of any solar roofing system that converts the direct current (DC) electricity generated by your solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity — the type your home appliances and electrical grid actually use. There are several inverter types, including string inverters, microinverters, and power optimizers, each with different efficiency levels, costs, and maintenance considerations that may appear in your installation proposal.

Net Metering

Net metering is a utility billing arrangement that allows homeowners with solar systems to send excess electricity they generate back to the power grid in exchange for credits on their energy bill. When your solar roof produces more power than your home consumes — such as on sunny days — the surplus is exported to the grid. These credits offset the electricity you draw from the grid at night or during cloudy periods, directly reducing your monthly energy costs.

Solar Incentives / Tax Credits

Solar incentives and tax credits are financial programs offered by federal, state, or local governments to reduce the upfront cost of installing a solar energy system. The most notable is the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which allows eligible homeowners to deduct a percentage of their total solar installation cost from their federal taxes. Understanding which incentives apply to your location and system type is essential when reviewing contractor proposals and calculating your return on investment.

Kilowatt-Hour (kWh)

A kilowatt-hour is the standard unit of measurement used to quantify electricity consumption and solar energy production. Your monthly utility bill is expressed in kWh, and your solar system's output is estimated in kWh as well. When contractors present performance projections, they will reference how many kWh your system is expected to generate annually — a figure that directly determines your projected savings and system payback period.

Roof Penetration

In solar installation, roof penetration refers to any point where mounting hardware, conduit, or fasteners pass through the roofing surface to secure the solar system to your home's structure. Improperly sealed roof penetrations are one of the leading causes of leaks and water damage following solar installations. Quality installation requires flashing, waterproofing materials, and precise techniques to ensure every penetration is sealed to preserve the integrity of your roof.

System Payback Period

The system payback period is the estimated length of time it will take for your energy savings to fully offset the total cost of your solar roof installation. It is calculated by dividing the net installation cost — after incentives and rebates — by your average annual savings on electricity. A shorter payback period indicates a more cost-effective system. Contractors should include this figure in any transparent and detailed solar proposal.
