Shingle Roofing Glossary

Understanding the language of shingle roofing systems is essential for every homeowner. Whether you’re performing routine maintenance, speaking with contractors, or evaluating your roof’s condition, knowing these key terms will help you make informed decisions about protecting your home from the elements.

Essential Terms Every Homeowner Should Know

An asphalt shingle is the most commonly used roofing material in North America, consisting of a fiberglass or organic mat base coated with asphalt and embedded with mineral granules. These granules protect the shingle from UV rays and weather exposure. Asphalt shingles are valued for their affordability, durability, and ease of installation, making them the standard choice for residential roofing projects across Central New York.
The roof deck is the structural surface — typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) — that sits beneath all roofing materials and forms the base layer of your roof system. Shingles and underlayment are installed directly on top of the decking. Damaged or rotting decking compromises the entire roof's integrity and must be repaired or replaced before new shingles are applied.
Underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier material installed directly onto the roof deck before shingles are laid. It provides a secondary line of defense against moisture infiltration in the event that shingles crack, lift, or become damaged. Common types include felt underlayment and synthetic underlayment, each offering different levels of durability and moisture protection.
Flashing refers to thin strips of metal — typically aluminum or galvanized steel — installed at vulnerable roof intersections and transitions, such as around chimneys, skylights, vents, and valleys. Its purpose is to seal joints and prevent water from seeping into the roof structure. Improperly installed or corroded flashing is one of the leading causes of roof leaks and interior water damage.
Granule loss describes the wearing away of the protective mineral granules embedded on the surface of asphalt shingles. As shingles age or sustain hail or storm damage, granules shed and often collect in gutters. Significant granule loss exposes the underlying asphalt to UV degradation, accelerating shingle deterioration and reducing your roof's remaining lifespan.
Hip and ridge shingles are specially designed shingles used to cap the peak lines — called ridges — and the angled exterior corners — called hips — of a roof. Unlike standard flat shingles, these are pre-bent or cut to conform to the angles of these transitions. They provide a finished appearance and a critical weather seal along the most exposed and vulnerable edges of the roof structure.
An ice and water shield is a self-adhering, waterproof membrane installed along roof edges, valleys, and other high-risk zones before underlayment and shingles are applied. It is specifically designed to prevent water backup caused by ice dams — a common issue in cold climates like Central New York — from infiltrating the roof deck and causing interior leaks and structural damage.
Roof ventilation refers to the system of intake and exhaust vents that allow air to circulate through the attic space beneath the roof deck. Proper ventilation regulates temperature and moisture levels, preventing heat buildup in summer and ice dam formation in winter. Inadequate ventilation can cause shingles to age prematurely, void manufacturer warranties, and lead to costly structural moisture damage over time.
