That meltwater flows down toward the eaves and refreezes upon reaching the colder roof edge, creating a dam that blocks drainage. Drip Edge

A drip edge is a metal flashing strip installed along the edges of a roof — particularly at the eaves and rakes — to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutters.
